I totally agree. It's a total wart on the UI. For a more complete proposal

I'm tempted to write this up as a POW either tonight or tomorrow, so I'd
appreciate up-front feedback on the proposed behaviors from folks on each
platform who care about nitty-gritty details in the look and feel.
