Another reason is that if we eventually implement Collapsible Outlining
or Automatic Tables of Contents, something like Word, certain built-in
styles may be the ones that are automatically recognized as being
headings for the TOC (or for Collapsible Outlining). The user needs the
flexibility to modify those styles to suit his document style. (Word
does, however, let you add an "Outline level" attribute to custom
defined styles (body or Heading 1 thru 9) which lets custom defined
styles substitute for the built-in ones in most cases.
The one case that I can immediately think of where custom defined styles
are not fully substitutable for the built in styles (in Word 97) is in
the automatic promotion or demotion of heading levels. When headings
are automatically promoted or demoted (under various circumstances),
only the built-in heading styles are applied. When we create the
equivalent features for AbiWord, we could let the user specify a custom
built class of headings to be used for the automatic promotion /
demotion instead of the built in heading styles. (Perhaps this has
already been addressed in Word 2000.)
