It'd be great to support both. But the problem is that this value gets set at
compile-time, so we can support one or the other *easily* (we may be able to
support both types, but that would require lots more work). I'm not spending any
more of my time making ispell work. Others may feel differently and are
encouraged to work on the ispell code all they like.

Yes, that's quite true. But we've historically provided many binaries available
for download in various formats (exe, qnx, rpm, deb, ...) so we have been a
packager. From that standpoint, I prefer my solution rather than Martin's.
Ximian (for example) is free to disagree and do whatever they'd like to, but
they have considerably more resources, actual employees, and money to work with.
We don't.
Just my .02 USD (or 0.03 EURO)
