I haven't downloaded AbiWord recently, and even if I did, I haven't ever
managed to compile it for Windows ... so, without knowing exactly what
is present in the AbiWord normal view, I might have phrased this
differently (all comments based on Word97):
You are *allowed* to see the headers and footers in normal mode, but
normally do not. There is a View --> Header and Footer menu option
which displays the headers and footers, ready for editing, along with a
toolbar for editing them. If you click close on the toolbar, the
headers and footers become invisible.
(I hope the document I sent you did not mislead you on this point.)
