UTF-8 plain text editing?

    Can AbiWord be conveniently used as a plain-text editor for UTF-8 documents?

    I'm starting to declare the character encoding in my HTML documents as UTF-8,
    but I edit them with Emacs and VI. It would be nice to use a GUI editor (I know
    emacs, but I'm not religious about it) and to be able to use UTF-8 text.

    This would be on Linux.
