Dear Sir,
I read with amusement the article
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/science_technology/story.jsp?story=554736
by Michael Pollitt about the Linux Operating System.
In particular he states: "Here's what I need to do next. Find a word
processor that reads my WordPerfect files properly and offers a word
count on selected text."
The AbiWord word processor (http://www.abisource.com) does exactly this.
See my screen shot:

More-over the AbiWord Word Count feature is non-modal and automatically
updates as you type in the document. So Journalists with word count
requirements can see exactly how far they into their word count budget
they are as they construct their document.
More-over in AbiWord, calculated fields (like word and character count)
update automatically and respond to selections (also shown in the screen
shot).
AbiWord also has an *excellent* Word Perfect importer which was used by
the City of Largo in Florida to convert their legacy Word Perfect files
into a more modern format.
For a little teaser of the capabilities of next release (AbiWord-2.2 due
in a month or so) see the following screenshot.

The AbiWord word processor is not hard to find. Simply type "Word
Processor" into google and you will find AbiWord as the first link.
Yours sincerely,
Martin Sevior
(Core AbiWord developer)
