If you can generate the .strings file I think Abiword will let you use it
immediately without a recompile (but I'm probably forgetting some
important details).

In your copy of Abiword look for the file fr-Fr.strings which contains the
messages in French.

I know you can indentify them by looking at the source code (almost all
the strings are in only two files and they later get merged when the
.PO file is created) but I dont know if you can tell from the PO files.
