stupid misplaced #ifdef DEBUG meant that in the release build all
characters measured 0; I must have introduced that few weeks back
when trying to fix the caret positioning problems on WinXP.

My release build system is completely screwed up, so I have not had a
chance to test it, but am 99.5% sure this fixes the problem.
