Can someone add to AbiWord an appropriate dialog (maybe a new dialog -
"Accessibility", to be opened from Preferences dialog) the following
option, which will help Israeli blind computer users.
The requested option is to completely turn off the BiDi algorithm when
displaying text on the screen.
The benefit is as follows.
Hebrew is usually rendered in bidirectional way.
However, when rendered in Braille for Hebrew-speaking blind readers, all
text is rendered in strict LTR direction. No BiDi at all.
Israeli blind computer users, who use wordprocessors like MS-Word with
Braille displays, suffer because they have to read the Hebrew text in
direction reverse to the natural direction of reading in Braille.
If the option can be implemented also in WIN32 platform, then it will
turn AbiWord into a killer application in this special market segment
(as it already can open MS-Word *.doc files).
Behdad: can you inquire what (if at all) are the corresponding needs of
Arabic and Persian speaking blind computer users? Do they also use
strict LTR order when rendering their languages in Braille? What needs
to be done with ligature transformation in their case?
Thanks,
--- Omer
