I also made a small fix a while back so that CVS HEAD versions (like
what KJD used to build) and other "unknown" (unreleased) versions were
handled gracefully. The code is actually quite lucid, so if we wanted
to, for instance, add support for another sort of version information
(like if I or sum1 started adding date info to the versions of our
builds), it's a piece of cake, relatively speaking.
My only suggestion is that it be changed to "Check for Updates", so it
is not confused with the About box, where people go to check to see what
version they have. It also implies increased functionality (it knows if
it has updates!) and reduces the appearance of bloat (why do they have
both a "check version" and "about"?). Sadly I know this is a string change.
