That's a sore issue but I've not yet been able to come up with a
proposal which is also visually appealing. Feel free to suggest
something specific. In the meantime

consequent variation of the previous toolbar proposal with almost all
buttons on the "format" menu providing menus (not quite sure about
that, maybe takes time getting used to it).

I'm pondering that for some time but didn't have a satisfying idea so
far. Time permitting (and noone speaking up against) I'll probably
implement something along the lines of

(the list on the left will be filled with property sections like
"paragraph", "language", ...).
