Need pointer to track down font metrics / character spacing problem

I've built abiword 2.6.6 on FreeBSD 6.4, however characters in the
documents are not spaced correctly. For example if I start abiword
and enter "Hello" all the letters overlap by about 90% (i.e. what I
see is a black ink smudge). If I enter "Hello" with about 15 spaces
between each letter, then the screen displays "Hello".

Where should I track back tracking in the debugger / what's a good
starting point?

Note: I have other GTK applications which work okay so I believe the
basic environment is somewhat sane.
