The GTK2+ > GTK3+ migration was a matter of much discussion on the
Sugar Labs / OLPC lists, in the end, a one-year period of supporting
both was the result, primarily because it is a big eco-system with
lots of different developers (core UI, activities, etc.). I think that
AbiWord is slightly less complex and so a hard cutover from one
version to the next might be advisable, but there are plugins to
consider in the migration. YMMV.
