This is unfortunately the desired behavior. It's called the "Single Document
Interface(SDI)". It seems to be all the rage these days. The way it works is,
each
document gets its own AbiWord window. The only advantage that I can see
is that you get multiple taskbar buttons at the bottom of the screen, which
in
my opinion is really just clutter. And if you want to see two documents side-

by-side you get two sets of toolbars and menus. More clutter. Then to top
it all off, when you close your last document, the abiWord window dis-
appears. It may very well be that these things are all undesireable to me
because I'm used to the "old" way of doing things, the "Multiple Document
Interface(MDI)". WordPerfect does it very well. Also check out GEdit and
gnotepad+ under GNOME for other examples of the MDI.

Possibly the real problem is that both interfaces are common. Browsers and
E-mail programs often use MDI. MS just switched to MDI for the Office apps.
But I am not convinced it's a good thing.
