You can get a lot of characters with the "compose" feature of Linux. The
British Pound is (Compose) - l (ell not one) and the accented characters
are a bit more obvious, e.g. (Compose) ` e for the French e grave,
(Compose) " u for German umlaut u etc. The "(Compose)" key is the right
control key on my US keyboard. I don't know the standard keyboard used
in Australia. As has been indicated before, there are some different
combinations when the keyboard has letter keys in places different from
the US one.

A note to developers.

The Abiword icon has a neutral background as standard and this means
that you have to touch the symbol rather carefully. I used KDE's icon
editor to fill in the background with a suitable color and thus require
less precise pointing. For me, that is a vast improvement.
