AbiWord imports XHTML, and infact only a subset of XHTML. HTML import is,
however, being worked on. In the interim, you can try using tidy
(available from www.w3c.org) to turn your perfectly good, working, known
valid HTML into XHTML, cross your fingers, and try again...
