because im basically not talking about the same thing you are.
im talking about menu item shortcuts

thats what you think, unless you are close to retirement dont bet on
having to switch to a fundamnetally different OS within 10 years
(even windows 3.11 is nothing like Windows XP and highly incompatible).

I dont care much about OS and if im on a Mac (like right now) or a windows
machine or a unix machine its important that Abiword is still Abiword.
(yes i know Abiword aint availble for mac yet, and you can tell this email
was sent from a Linux machine by looking at the headers, but those are
just technicalities). Its all about the Applications.

What im saying is that any built in keybindings would have to be aware of
these considerations, but there is no reason why user specified keybinding
could not choose these for themselves if and when the hotkeys feature was
implemented.
