Hi John,
        AbiWord requires at least 16 Megabytes of RAM. With that and a
stripped down Linux with the gtk-only abiword you *might* get somthing
usable.

I can't think of any of the current developers who would be interested in
doing a dos port.

However, in relation to your point, you may want to go to www.freedos.org which is developing a GPL version of DOS. Although the current offering is beta 7, or something like that, the offering is quite mature having been in development for years. In addition, they have tons of links to various DOS programs that are available for free (download, etc.). One of the stated purposes of FreeDOS is to provide an OS for older hardware (there are other uses of DOS also). Hopefully you can something useful there for reviving an old computer.
