This used to be available by simply pressing F12, but the feature was not
being particularly well maintained and its shockingly scary for a novice
user to (accidentally) press F12 and have Abiword start acting crazy.
When i was a novice user i rember the concept of 'Insert' and
'Replace' (aka Over-Write) being confusing.
i always expected the default 'Insert' mode, even though
that was a very long time ago i can still empathise with users who would
be terrified by accidentally turning on emacs keybindings.

You can edit your Abiword.profile to turn on vi/emacs keybindings, which
is not an unreasonable thing to expect of a vi/emacs user. (emacs is only
easy when you know how, if even then)

The other shortcuts - such as Ctrl + N for a new window - are all
carefully chosen to resemble Microsoft Word, unless it particularly
makes a lot of sense to do otherwise.
(Ctrl is the command key on windows and my dist. of Linux, on a Mac, BeOS,
etc your command key may vary)

So if you want it to be easily switchable ask the developers and they will
probably tell you what i just said, and although i think it is highly
unlikely they might re-enable F12 to switch keybinding modes.

despite still being a _product_, abiword is currently run entirely by
volunteers.

Hmm, i think i see the real answer to your problems. Your destroying my
stereotypical idea of an emacs user.

maybe, but i think the vast majority of our users or on Microsoft Windows
and the fact that Abiword is XP and does not try and force me to use a
particular OS is what i think is killer
(because proportionately there are so many more MS users to choose from)
((i realise the emacs runs on just about everything))

customisable menus may be available by v1.0, maybe you could create plugin
button on the toolbar.
