I ran into the same error when I started abiword. Your question came
just before I did that, so I looked more closely at the solution you
quoted. First, the solution talks about adding the line

Load "type1"

to one or both of two files. I don't know whether the
/etc/X11/XF86Config file needs the addition, but there are no "load"
instructions anywhere in that file. However, the file,
/etc/X111/XF86Config-4, has such lines. Where to add the line, though,
I'm uncertain. I tried adding it in the "Module" section, with the other
Load lines, but that didn't help. I didn't want to mess around with that
file, which handles all the X configuration.

So, I followed the secondary recommendation instead. As root, I ran the
command,

chkfontpath -a /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts

which adds that fonts path to the list of font dirs in the file,
/etc/X11/fs/config. If you'll check that file after running the command,
you'll see the new .../AbiSuite/fonts dir in there. (You can remove a
dir from that list using -r instead of -a.)

I hope that helps.
