Subject: Re: Print Preview - Print layout. What am I missing?

John,
I'll try to explain the situation. I think some of the developer's read
this list and will correct me if I go too far wrong.
The problem is that the "real" intended "Normal layout" view has not
been created yet. It is intended to be much like Word's normal view,
which is sort of like viewing the document on an infinitely long sheet
of paper with no margins (side or top/bottom). (It is on the ToDo
"list".)
(That much I'm pretty sure is accurate, except maybe another named view
will come into existence to be the equivalent of Word's normal view, the
next part is less clear to me. (I looked at the Linux version, and
there the two views are labeled "Normal" and "Print Layout", but my
Linux version was compiled from CVS and not necessarily exactly the same
version as my Windows AbiWord.)
The Print Layout view is AbiWord's original view, which always included
paper of the appropriate size and top, bottom, and side margins. I
vaguely recall some conflicting discussions, one that says that this
does serve as a sort of poor man's Print Preview, and another which sort
of implied that the best printing features (at this time) exist only
under Linux/Gnome, which might have a real Print Preview.
So to address one of your points, AFAIK, Print Layout is not intended to
be the final and complete Print Preview.
Also, since the real Normal layout does not exist yet, it appears to
simply shows the same view as the Print Layout. (Perhaps we should
consider disabling Normal layout until it comes into existance, or maybe
what we see is the beginning of the Normal view and I don't notice any
differences on the simple test document I'm viewing.)
However, AFAIK, Print Layout should change to show the effect of
different size pages and portrait / landscape, and it seems to work on
my Windows version (0.9.2).
Hope this helps,
Randy Kramer
