It's almost certainly that your were running a broken theme in SuSe 8.2.
AbiWord-2.0 picks up it's highlighting colour from the current GTK 2.0
theme. If it's broken somehow (or it's a gtk-1.x theme) no highting colour
is fund and none is drawn.
If you still have acccess to SUSE 8.2 try a different gtk-2 theme.
