If I'm not mistaken, 1.9 was a test series for 2.0 (anyone?)
I've had a lot of luck with a pre-1.0 (amazing, but true) version (.99.7
or something like that?) on a Compaq Laptop with 8 (maybe 4) megs of
ram. It seems like the 1.0.x series was a lot simpler than this new
1.9/2.0 (which I still don't fully + completely trust and use everywhere)

My advice, assuming that that actually is a test version, is to grub up
a 1.0.2 or thereabouts build, if it's not a lot of hassle. I suspect
you may have even better luck with that.

(Have you tried a PCMCIA network card? They're wonderful for this sort
    of installation thing)
