Thanks to several folks for help with getting AbiWord working in Russian
! The solutions were :

1) install the aspell-ru package to have a compatible dictionary

and

2) install true-type cyrillic fonts (I'm not sure what type my others
were...)

So now I'm off and running. Now my biggest problem : learning how to
type Cyrillic !!!
