Right-click on the shortcut that you use to start AbiWord (in the Start menu
or on the desktop). Select "Properties" at the bottom of the menu. Change
the "Start in" field to the directory of your choice.

One day we may auto-detect the "My Documents" directory on Windows as part
of AbiWord startup.
