    The trouble is that ASCII is a very limited character set and all the
    special characters don't officially belong to ASCII. Even worse, there
    are many different conventions for defining the various symbols people
    want to add.

    AbiWord has two ways to import text. If you haven't already, try
    selecting "Encoded Text" from the filetypes list in the File->Open
    dialog box; you will need to select also a codepage, which I'm guessing
    will be "Western European, Windows Code Page 1252" for you.
