With either version 2.0.14 or the current 2.1.99 Windows version of AbiWord I get the following:
1. A simple single page test document at my printer's default 300dpi resolution prints correctly.
2. The same document printed at a higher quality setting, eg one at 600dpi, produces a print with text twice the correct size.
Eg An M in 12pt Arial printed at 300dpi is approx 4.2mm high, printed at 600dpi it's approx 8.4mm high with a similar doubling in width.
The same occurs for other fonts tried eg Times New Roman at 12pt.
3. My printer has a built-in duplex (double sided print) facility. When the printer driver is configured to use the duplex facility and I load a simple 2 page test document, prints from AbiWord ignore this setting and come out as 2 single sided pages.
My setup is as follows: Windows XP HE SP2, HP Business Inkjet 1200dtwn with the current driver installed.
With the same documents exported as RTF and either loaded into the MS Word viewer or StarOffice 7 (Sun's version of OpenOffice) all prints are as they should be, with regard to text size, at all print quality settings and when the driver is set for double sided settings I get double sided prints. I frequently use the Widows version of Adobe's Acrobat viewer and have never had any abnormal prints at any resolution or duplex on/off setting.
One other surprise to me is that such a simple document (one line at 12pt Arial bold, one line at 12pt Times New Roman) doesn't import into StarOffice correctly. Does RTF have such a limited specification that basic font settings are not exported/imported correctly or is this a Windows problem? The MS Word viewer does render these fonts correctly however.
At the StarOffice end the first Arial line loses it's bold effect and the second line is rendered in Arial 12pt.
If I include an inserted page number in the footer in the AbiWord file then this does arrive successfully in the Word viewer although instead of being centred as in the AbiWord original it's on the left hand side. Footers exported from AbiWord in RTF don't show at all when loaded into StarOffice 7.
Finally a useful addition to AbiWord's print dialogue, for user's who don't have a duplex capable printer, would be to be able to print either just odd numbered pages or just even numbered pages.

Jonathan Briggs
