I was genuinely interested to know why.

I really should have phrased the question better, it reads like I
was being sarcastic or condescending perhaps.

Anyway, Dom has changed the default to be on so as to avoid these kinds of
problems in future. Those who want smaller postscript files (the only
reason I can think of to disable font embedding) will be the ones that
need to figure out the checkbox to not embed fonts is in the print dialog.
