To return to the original topic, the rest of the responses having gone
rather OT, thanks for the suggestions but no progress so far. I've tried
various combinations of the things suggested but to no avail. My video
card driver is up to date. As AbiWord 2.2.5 is the only application
exhibiting this problem, I think I have to look to AbiWord for a solution.
I note that, unlike MS Word and the other text applications I have here,
AbiWord uses XML for its file format. What, if anything, could cause my PC
to wrongly interpret the XML and make characters invisible?
In case it helps someone far more expert than I am, this is the content of
