Smaller icons/smaller panel request

I am trying to use abiword 2.4.1 on a small 640x480 screen
(a psion netbook, in fact, running Debian Sarge). The icons
and the tool bar are a little too big for this screen. I
cannot see the right quarter of the tools, because they are
clipped off.

I have figured out how to use ~/.gtkrc-2.0 to make the icons
in the toolbar small (using an entry
"gtk-toolbar-icon-size = GTK_ICON_SIZE_SMALL_TOOLBAR" )

But now I have the same sized toolbar, but with small icons in
it! Can someone please advise me on how to get the toolbar
itself, and the horizontal spacing of the icons, to tighten up?

I know very little of gtk, and I've exhausted google trying to
find a solution. Hopefully a solution exists. This issue would
seem worthy of a FAQ, seems to me!

Thanks,
B.D.
