I can't get abiword's spell checker to work

I am using abiword 2.2.1 on feather linux 7.1
based on knoppix based on debian. Neither the
auto spell check or the regular spell check will
work. I select those options and nothing is
done. I tried upgrading, but it messed up my
computer so bad I had to reinstall. I don't know
enough to upgrade anything.
