If that worked then what you really need is to configure abiword to
print via a gui command rather than via lpr(1) or lp(1).
In Abi's print dialog, set Location to Custom and specify a spooling
command that uses a gui.
Some of the choices are xpp, gtklp, qtcups and kprinter. hey should
all be available in any of the popular linux distributions and in the
ports trees in the BSDs. On OSX Apple probably provides an app that
does the same.
When the spooler app runs it queries cups and offers all of the
choices on a per-job basis that you can set via the browser. They
generally also let you specify instances and you default options for a
given printer. All of that is saved to your ~/.lpoptions file.
