Discrepency in sizing between Abiword and other programs

Basically, pages, including the text on them, look smaller on Abiword at
100% zoom than on every other program on my computer. In fact, it's not
just non-conformist, it's plain incorrect. Times New Roman at 12pt on a
96dpi display is supposed to look a certain way - and it does on all
programs - except on Abiword.

Can anyone explain this behavior and perhaps how to correct it?

Gentoo Linux
Kernel: 2.6.11-morph9
Xorg server
17 inch LCD monitor
  dimensions: 1280x1024 pixels (342x271 millimeters)
  resolution: 95x96 dots per inch
