If you are using Windows, you'll want to associate the ".doc" extension with Abiword.

This is an option when you install Abiword, or you can do it manually in windows explorer - tools - folder options - file types.

Next thing I would try is to delete all entries in Helper Applications,
to see if the browser asks again.
It seems like there is another entry claiming for .doc's
