auto formatting

Whenever I try to open a document in AbiWord, it
automatically transforms into Times New Roman font
with size 12. Is there a way to stop this? Also I have
some ebooks from Project Gutenberg, these books use
symbols for italics and underline. Is there a specific
symbol or shortcut in Abiword that I can order it to
replace the original symbols with it, so that they can
be viewed and printed in the same look that the
authors intended them to be?

for example (_Anton Chekhov_) is supposed to be shown
in italics according to the original intended text. I
don't see it in italics, how can I change this?
