The best type imho - keep your sensitive documents on an encrypted
filesystem that requires a good pass phrase to mount. If your laptop or
hard drive is stolen, sensitive stuff you are working on can not be read
unless they manage to crack the filesystem encryption.

It's possible some stuff might be obtained from your swap file though if
they can't crack your file system.

For sending docs - there you use an external tool.
Plugins to AbiWord to access them might be beneficial.
