why don't my insert symbols work?

Hi,

I'm using abi word 2.2.10 on a Mac OS X.4.2

I've opened an openoffice document and am trying to
insert a french character whose name I forget (it is
an a with a hat on it). Anyway, I go to insert symbol
and there is my little a with its hat but when I
insert I get a totally different character. This
happens with most of my symbols. I tried saving the
document as abiword doc but the same thing still
happens.

So, basically, why are my symbols not coming into
abiword as what they say they are and is there any
fix?!
