A couple of export/import copy/paste options that you might consider. I
have done a quick check and both seem to work in principle.

1) StripMail http://www.dsoft.com.tr/stripmail/index.html Freeware

2) TextPad http://www.textpad.com

On a superficial test here, StripMail in its DoItAll mode allows you to
highlight/copy in AbiWord, hit the DoItAll button in StripMail and then
paste back into AbiWord quite easily. Whether it meets your whole need I
can't say. Obviously limited in the characters that are stripped and,
presumably, in text formatting.

TextPad is shareware but has proper Find and Replace functionality.
