Abiword won't Load

I had AbiWord running for several months (vers 2.3, I think) Now when I
load the abiword.exe file the program won't load and error message occurrs:

"AbiWord.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the inconvenience."

So. I uninstalled and re-loaded latest 2.4 version today. Installed fine.
But same problem....won't load. Any ideas?

Running on HP Pavilion a1132n , Windows XP Home (latest upgrades), 1 gig
ram, 200 gig HD.
