You could go for the Linux-installed-to-USB-flash-drive route.

Puppy Linux is only 60M and fits nicely in a 128M flash drive,
with about 50M left over for personal data.
Current version of Abiword in Puppy is 2.4.1.

Doesn't touch the PC's hard drive at all, but then you have to be
able to set the BIOS to boot from usb, which it may not be, or
may not even be capable of.
