There's an open bug report about losing window dimensions on OS X
(http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8324), which might be
the problem you're experiencing. As for setting the default font, you
need to modify the 'Normal' style for normal.awt. These steps should
allow you to do that, but I can't verify since I'm not at my usual
computer:

- Format > Style > Create and Modify
- Select "Normal"
- Press the Modify button
- Choose Format > Font
- Change the font face/size and press OK twice and then Close
