Do you know about file formats?
What I said is that AbiWord supports RTF as an exchange
format. But the person saving a (new) file will have to
choose this format. Such a file will have a name ending
in .doc or .rtf. If you are creating the file, you can do
this. If someone else did, perhaps you can ask them to do
this.

If you need to read a file whose name ends in .abw, then
until word processors offer better XML support or better
AbiWord support, you will have to open it in AbiWord. Of
course that just means 2 minutes to download and 2 minutes
to install: it's small, simple, and fast. Here is the link:

In your case, just click where it says Microsoft Windows.

PS While a .abw file should open in Notepad, you will see
a lot of markup in addition to the text. Generally you will
not want that.
