Just so you know "Public Domain" is different from free, and very
different from GPL software. Books which have gone out of copyright are
considered public domain. Abiword is distributed for free but it very
much protected by copyright as is the thesaurus software.

Also you might consider giving the Linux version of Abiword a try. Live
CDs make it quite easy to try out Linux and VMWare player is another
option. Maybe that is more techinical than you want but I figured I
should make sure the option was mentioned in case you wanted to try it out
and experiment.
