I believe both the instructions provided by Alan and the ones I most
nearly just sent you (and that follow) are for Windows. (For
completeness: A simpler way with less possible confusion for Word (it
gets picky about how it is started and associated) is to simply
uninstall AbiWord, verify that Word now opens docs by default, then
install AbiWord again, but this time make sure not to check the box to
associate AbiWord with .rtf and .doc files.)

I do not know how to do this on the Mac, and it may be that Alan's
instructions were indeed for the Mac and it is just so similar to
Windows that I mistook it as such.
