I believe it's been done (in W) where this mode is set or disabled by
clicking or double-clicking the notification in the corner (which is a
grayed-out OVR or something like that normally, and fully-dark when
overwrite is enabled). We use INS and OVR, but the feature could still
be the same/similar. Then, unbind the keystroke (insert key) from the
mode, and this problem would be reduced. What needs to be evaluated is
how much it is used nowadays. (I suspect in the past it was more useful
because overwrite mode was the default in DOS and early WP's, if I'm not
mistaken.)
