I filed this as a bug with fontconfig in FC6 - and I just updated the
bug report because the issue is still there with Fedora 8.
I just thought I'd mention it here in the off chance there is something
AbiWord could be doing differently.
It seems fontconfig doesn't always do the right thing if there are more
than the standard four faces available with Type 1 fonts.
Example - the URW clone of Helvetica - Nimbus Sans L
For normal and bold, it grabs the right font but gets the metrics from
the narrow variants. For italic and bold italic - it grabs the narrow
variant font and narrow variant metrics.
For helvetica (real type 1 helvetica) it similarly screws up.
Interestingly, remove the narrow variants of type 1 helvetica and it
does exactly what it is suppose to do. It only screws up when the narrow
variants are present.
