[problem] file is been displayed in xml

hello, I've a strange problem, my girlfriend used abiword to write a document and while saving, she didnt selected a format thus it was saved without and extension. the file is been identified has a abiword document but when the file is being opened, instead of the file context, I see a xml/html like commands. is there a way to rescue the file's context?
