Hi. I'm a Mac user (for the last year and a half). Hopefully I can help
a bit. I'm running OS X 10.4.8. Hopefully it works on 10.3 as well.

Like mentioned by others, it sounds like AbiWord has been assigned to
open some types of Word documents. I believe this is a system-wide
setting, so changing it once should make it work from now on.

I recommend trying these steps:
 1. Find an email with one of the MS Word files that opens in AbiWord
instead. Choose to save the attachment from within Mail. I recommend
saving it somewhere easy to access, such as the Desktop.
 2. I think the file will appear with an AbiWord icon.
 3. Right-click (or Control-click) the file and select Get Info.
 4. Under the Open With section, it should list AbiWord. Pick MS Word
(or whatever application you'd like to use to open the files) from
the list, and then click the Change All... button.
 5. In the confirmation box that appears, press Continue (if you're sure
you'd like to transfer ownership of that type of file to MS Word).

I think that should do it.

Let us know if that helps.
