It was optional in the past but now it is required. There is no point
in maintaining duplicate printing code (the non-libgnomeprint printing
was lacking in comparison anyways).
If you could point out where you got that information from we could
try to update it.

We are certainly considering that, but at the moment our codebase is
in feature freeze, as we're working towards the 2.6 release. Please
also bear in mind that "switching to the new gtk+ print widget" sounds
so innocent, yet it would require major changes in the way AbiWord is
drawing things (switching to cairo, for those inclined).
