Can't open / edit normal.awt

Abiword 2.4.6 - latest stable. Fedora core 5. KDE.

I just want to change the default font, and the "help" that I've seen
for this seems quite outdated.

My problem in that the prior published recommended fixes involved
editing the normal.awt.

1) Can't open ~/.AbiSuite/normal.awt.

Under either Gnome or KDE, using Abiword's file open dialog, there is no
way to navigate to a hidden directory (and therefore, open up normal.awt
in ~/.AbiSuite) There is no free-form 'input' box in which one would
manually type in a file name (as was recommended by a prior help file),
only a point and click dialog box, which doesn't list hidden directories...

2) Oops! ~/.AbiSuite/normal.awt does not exist in the first place.
There is one under root's ownership (uneditable by the user) under
/usr/share/AbiSuite-2.4/templates

3) I copied that over to my user directory, "edited" it (see phase 2)
saved it, put it in my ~/AbiSuite directory, but Abiword is only using
/usr/share/AbiSuite-2.4/templates...

If I were to su to root, edit the /usr/share/etc normal template(s), and
figure out how to edit the styles would THAT work?

Finally, Is there any way to make this easier?
